What a Week - Smyrna, DE
Friday, February 5, 2010

What a week it has been at Station 44. Two winter storms with blizzard conditions hammered the area starting on Friday, February 5th. After 6 days and over 30 inches of snow it's over. The station was staffed with several crews starting on Friday night. Ambulance 64 was transferred to the station for the duration of the storm. The majority of the calls were to assist the ambulance crew by plowing their way with 44-0. After two full days and nights, a short break between storms allowed the crews some time to clean off the roof in preparation for the next round of wet snow. The second storm started on Tuesday night and continued until around midnight on Wednesday. Once again several crews staffed the station for the duration of the storm. A short trip to Rt. 1 for an MVC started the night. Ambulance 64 was once again transferred to the station and ran their calls with 44-0 leading the way. The Ladies Auxiliary stayed busy during the storms providing hot meals to the crews at the station, the town crews out plowing the roads, and the Smyrna Police Department officers that were on duty. During the two storms over 500 hot meals were served and even included a midnight meal on Wednesday night. About 20 members of the Auxiliary were in and out lending a hand during the week. Many members were picked up and returned home with the help of 44-10 and it's 4-wheel drive. Once the snow ended it was time to dig out. Members traveled around town clearing the homes of over 40 elderly members and widows of members. A huge thank you to everyone who came up to help.
